COMMON QUESTIONS

SURFING

When is the best time to visit Weligama for ideal surf conditions?

Weligama bay provides year-round surf. During the peak season – December to April – the weather is dry, skies are sunny and surf is consistent  —ideal for learning to surf and leveling up.

During the monsoon aka “Green” season (May to October), there are occasional showers, but fewer crowds, fun swells, and great learning conditions for both beginners and seasoned surfers.

The shoulder months, April and October, often deliver some of the best swells with fewer tourists around.

When is the best surf season in Weligama?

You can surf in Weligama year-round, with the best surf conditions between November and April. These months provide consistent waves suitable for all levels. If you prefer quieter beaches & line-ups, the Green season (May to October) still offers good surfing with fewer crowds.

What skill levels do you accommodate at Lucky’s Surf Camp?

We welcome complete beginners and intermediate surfers. Whether you’re learning how to pop up on a board or perfecting your maneuvers, our professional surf instructors tailor each session to your ability.

How are the surf lessons structured?

Surf lessons at Lucky’s Surf Camp are held in small groups with up to 5 students per instructor, based on your skill level.

Each surf lesson includes surf board and rash guard, lasts approximately 1.5 hours, starts with surf theory that covers essential techniques and ocean knowledge, and continues in the water.

Do you provide surfboards and wetsuits?

Yes, we provide a range of surfboards, including soft tops for beginners and hard boards for more experienced surfers.

Wetsuits are not necessary due to the warm water temperatures, but we do offer rash vests for sun protection. You’re welcome to bring your own board if you prefer.

I’ve never surfed before. Is this camp for me?

Absolutely! We cater to all skill levels, including complete beginners. Our surf instructors will teach you all the basics, making sure your first surfing experience is unforgettable.

How many people are in a surf group?

To give you the best possible attention, we limit group sizes to a maximum of 5 people per instructor. This ensures personalized coaching and faster progress.

YOGA

Is there yoga at Lucky's surf camp?

We believe yoga complements surfing perfectly by helping with balance, flexibility, mental focus and recovery after a long day on the waves. That’s why we have sunset yoga lessons 6 days a week, and it is complimentary to guests staying at Lucky’s, when Surf & Stay package or Room is booked directly on our website. The sessions are held on our dedicated open-air rooftop.

*Please note, in case of rain, yoga lesson may be canceled.

Do I need yoga experience to join the sessions?

Our yoga sessions are designed for all levels, with a focus on restorative yoga tailored for surfers, so whether you’re a seasoned yogi or a complete beginner, you’ll feel comfortable and supported. The instructor will offer modifications based on your ability and comfort level.

What are the benefits of combining surfing and yoga?

Yoga and surfing go hand in hand when it comes to enhancing your surfing skills. Practicing yoga increases flexibility, balance, and both physical and mental strength—key elements for improving your surf performance.

Our sunset yoga sessions help you recover and rejuvenate after a day of surfing, preparing your body for the next session in the water.
